Virginia Tech Army ROTC Study Abroad Programs
Each year the Virginia Tech Army ROTC Department provides several opportunities for Army Cadets to travel abroad and gain valuable military experience as well as gaining an appreciation for foreign cultures.
The Cadet Troop Lead Training (CTLT) is a two track program (Platoon Leader and Internship). The Platoon Leader track provides Cadets the opportunity to experience leadership in Army operational units over a three to four week period and serve in platoon leader positions or other positions where a Second Lieutenant is normally assigned. The Internship track offers a myriad of training opportunities, for Cadets with special language, technical, or research skills, with various agencies in the Department of Defense. Internships include positions with the Central Identification Laboratory, Defense Information Systems Agency, National Ground Intelligence Center, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), Army Science Board, US Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM) and more.
The George and Carol Olmsted Foundation Internship (OFCOT) is a culture immersion internship that was established in 2003 and sends cadets overseas during summer months for a period of up to four weeks. The internship is designed to educate future career military officers who exhibit extraordinary potential in becoming the country's future military leaders. The two to four week trips funded by this program consist of a combination of briefings, visits to foreign military academies, participation in educational tours, working in American Embassies etc. OFCOT provides cadets an opportunity to study and/or visit places in Africa, Europe, Asia, and Central and South America. Thus, the Olmsted Foundation's support of overseas travel for cadets, both in the short term and well into the future, will ensure the quality, depth and breadth of the program and its relevance to the Army's strategic vision.
