CLAHS EXCELLENCE IN UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT ADVISING AWARD

To recognize an outstanding faculty member in the advising of undergraduate students.   Up to 3 awards will be given for CLAHS Excellence in Undergraduate Student Advising.

Recipient must be a CLAHS instructor, lecturer, AP (administrative and professional faculty), tenured, or tenure-track faculty member for whom the advising of undergraduate students is and has been an assigned responsibility for a minimum of three years and must meet the following criteria:

  • Evidence of excellence in orienting undergraduate students to the academic field;
  • Evidence of excellence in explaining policies and procedures that govern academic matters;
  • Evidence of excellence in assisting undergraduate students with course selection;
  • Evidence of excellence in assisting undergraduate students with career guidance and placement;
  • Evidence of participation in or development of professional development activities or products for advising.

Application:

  • Nomination letter from self or others highlighting nominee’s advising expertise and success (1 page maximum).
  • Nominee’s statement of advising philosophy (1 page maximum)
  • Summary of nominee’s advising activities including (3 pages maximum):
    • Listing of the number of advisees by major and/or option for at least the past three years;
    • Listing of nominee’s activities with respect to orientation, policies and procedures, course selection, career guidance/placement, and participation in or development of advising development activities or products.
  • One or two letters of support from current or former advisees (1 page maximum each).

Timeline:

  • November 2 - Information about the awards are distributed to faculty/departments
  • February 1 - Deadline for submission of 17 copies of the complete application to Fred Piercy, Chair of the CLAHS Honor’s and Awards Committee, 260 Wallace Hall, Mail Code – 0426, piercy@vt.edu
  • Feb. 7 – Apr. 2 Applications are reviewed and recipients are selected
  • April 4 - Nominees are notified of award decisions (selection and non-selection)
  • April 18-Committee presents awards at CLAHS 2007-2008 Honors and Awards Reception in Owens Banquet Hall from 4:00-6:00 p.m.

Recognition:
Plaque and $500 for professional development presented at the April 18 Reception.

Note:  Winners are not eligible for this award for the three years after receiving it.
