Founded in 1872 as a land-grant college, Virginia Tech is the most comprehensive university in the Commonwealth of Virginia and is among the top research universities in the nation.  Nestled in the beautiful Alleghany Mountains, Virginia Tech’s eight colleges are dedicated to quality, innovation, and results through learning, discovery and engagement.   The College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences is one of the largest and most diverse colleges on the Virginia Tech campus and encompasses disciplines in the arts, humanities, social and human sciences as the primary academic clusters.  The college nurtures intellect and spirit, enlightens decision-making, inspires positive change, and improves the quality of life for people of all ages.   It is composed of 19 departments, and numerous additional centers and units.  The college population consists of 3,500 majors, 1,500 graduate students, and over 500 faculty and staff.
