Preferred or desired qualifications – Excellence in teaching. Evidence of potential for strong research program. Area of specialization: 20th century historical studies (esp. physical science or technology), science/technology and the law, or engineering cultures.

FTE: Full-Time

Director of the Writing Center, Associate Professor of Composition

The Department of English at Virginia Tech invites applications for a tenured professor to direct our Writing Center and take a leadership role in the development of undergraduate and graduate programs in professional communication and composition. This position is subject to final budget approval. The teaching load will be one course a semester, plus significant administrative responsibilities as Writing Center director. We seek someone with vision and energy to oversee the Writing Center's evolution from its current role as a provider of strong tutoring services to its new role as a Center for the Study of Writing.

Required: Ph.D. in composition or related field; experience directing a college writing center or long-term experience as a tutor in a college writing center; active research project in composition (specialization open); strong teaching credentials. Preferred: expertise in empirical or ethnographic research design, computer-aided writing instruction, writing-across-the-curriculum, ESL, grant-writing/fundraising.

Assistant Professor of African American Literature The English Department at Virginia Tech seeks applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professorship in early African American literature and culture. This position is dependent upon final budget approval.

Required: Applicants must have a solid background in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century African American literature and culture, show evidence of successful teaching, and demonstrate the promise of significant scholarly research. Completion of the Ph.D. in English is required before the date of appointment. Preferred: A secondary interest in other ethnic literatures, in literature and the law, or in cultural studies. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate level courses, establishing a solid research program, and serving on departmental, college, and university committees.
